6 Epistle for the Twenty First Sunday after Pentecost الرسالة لألحد الحادي والعشرين بعد العنصرة O Lord, how magnified are Thy works! In wisdom hast Thou made them all! Bless the Lord, O my soul! The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians (2:16-20). Brethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ. Even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the Law, because by works of the Law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the Law died to the Law, that I might live to God. At that time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus,

7 Son of the Most High God? I beseech Thee, do not torment me. For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. [For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.] Jesus then asked him, What is your name? And he said, Legion ; for many demons had entered him. And they begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Jesus to let them enter these. So He gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. 14 Does the Orthodox Church believe in Halloween? Is it ok to attend costume parties or for our children to go trick or treating? Historians differ in their opinion regarding the origins of Halloween. Many trace it back to pagan events prior to the time of Christ. But the name itself implies a more recent usage by Western Christians (Roman Catholics, in particular) to honor the Saints. The word Halloween comes from the phrase: The Eve of the All Holy. The Catholic Church celebrates All Saints Day on November 1st (The Orthodox Church celebrates it on the first Sunday after Pentecost). So the evening before, on October 31st, early Christians traditionally held prayer services over the graves of the Saints. Such sites were chosen, first to honor the martyrdom of the Saints, and second to pray in hiding from the persecution of the Roman authorities. So even though the original intent of this day was a holy one, our society - which has mastered the art of profaning holy events got a hold of Halloween and likewise handed it a similar fate. Saints buried in graves were skillfully marketed into ghosts and evil forces scaring people in graveyards, where if you don t provide the ghost with a treat, he will trick you into selling your soul. And here we are today. Halloween in its present form is not an Orthodox celebration, and many Orthodox clergy understandably warn against participating in it. However, there are precedents in our Orthodox history where Early Christians took a pagan holiday and used it as an opportunity to evangelize. We can do likewise, but only if we are well entrenched in our Christian faith. First we begin by ensuring that our children understand that Halloween is a holy day (as in hallowed be thy name, from the Lord s Prayer). They need to be comfortable and convinced that on this day wearing a costume portraying their favorite Saint, is more appropriate than wearing that of their favorite super hero. Even the distribution of candy can be a valuable evangelization tool. For example, we can follow what one family here at St. Mary does every year: They take the candy bar and wrap it nicely with a color paper that has the following message printed on it:

15 "Dear child of God, With this candy bar, we also offer you our prayers that you receive the best gift of all: God s abundant blessings. Halloween is a feast that honors all the Saints who have sacrificed their life in the service of God and His people. (The word Halloween means the eve of the All Holy ). Tomorrow, November 1st, is All Saints Day. Please remember to pray that God will give you the courage, wisdom, patience and compassion to live your life in a manner pleasing to Him, whether in school, at home, or in the playground. Use the gifts that God has given you to serve others. Work hard. Love. Forgive. And may He bless you and be with you on your journey to sainthood, Amen." It is the children often with an adult that are the ones coming to our door. We re not going to them. So this is a very soft and passive evangelization. We should be neither afraid nor embarrassed to do it. And since most parents examine the candy before their children do, it is very likely that we are reaching the adults more so than the children. These children Christ s little angels have a way of bringing adults to Christ; giving all of us an opportunity to restore this holy event to its intended purpose. Perhaps this evangelization will give us the momentum and the courage to likewise reverse other days that we ve sadly lost: Turkey Day back into Thanksgiving Day, Frosty the Snowman into the Birth of our Savior; and the Easter Bunny into the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ.
